Bhairavi Already?
"Few institutions have had the kind of opening success as this new Indian music organization", wrote the Oregonian's Jonathan Nicholas, when Kalakendra held its first concert in 1987. And few such a lamented closing! It has become a feature of the city's cultural landscape. Gidu Sriram takes a wistful look back, and Indogram joins him in seeking your help to save this Portland institution. More...

Bonfire of the Hannities
Political correctness and false symbolism, to say nothing of Empire, puts paid to the First Amendment. Start wars with impunity, torture without apology, eavesdrop away without authority, but god forbid you should say something that might be offensive to someone! Niranjan Ramakrishnan writes on the Imus affair. More...

The Other Side of America
The obvious is often the last thing to be considered. No guns, no shooting. So you might think. Not so fast. The affection for guns is an old one in America, dating back to its founding. Many people have a sincere belief that the answer to incidents such as the Virginia Tech killings is more guns, not less. Lakshmi Jagannathan explores the debate. More...

In Reverse Gere?
Perhaps it was best expressed by a friend: What we don't even do in private, these guys do in public! Richard Gere turned to actress Shilpa Shetty, standing next to him, and planted an affectionate kiss on her cheek. Or three. And the next thing he knew, there was a riot. Or three. In multiple cities. All baying for his blood. Now a Jaipur judge has an arrest warrant out for him. The ultimate irony -- this all happened at an AIDS event. Maybe his own way Richard Gere has succeeded in educating the public on the perils of promiscuity! Some thoughts. More...

Blogging for Columbine
While everyone is hunting for moral and meaning in the mayhem in Virginia Tech, trust Melvin Durai to find it. And no, it's not black humor from Blacksburg either. Getting the truth out is vital, and Melvin takes a shot, er... tries his hand...at blogging. In these matters, conviction is vital, so long as you don't get busted, that is. More...

Obituary: Subbudu
The doyen of Indian music and dance criticism, Subbudu, died in New Delhi on March 29. He was 90.

A fearless writer equally fluent in Tamil and English, he garnered intense reactions, both admiration and rage, from those in the music and dance worlds.

For over 50 years, he bestrode the Indian music scene, keeping to his motto that the music was more imporatant than the musician.

Indogram joins his admirers and detractors in India and elsewhere in remembering a unique personality. We shall not see his like again.
