Kavya Shivshankar of Olathe, Kansas, took top spot at the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee, winning the $40000 prize. The budding neurosurgeon clinched the championship by spelling the word Laodecian. The third place in the championship was taken by Anamika Viramani.

Meanwhile, Portland youngster Arjun Kandasamy, 14, placed second in the National Geography Bee. He was followed by Shantan Krovvidi, another student of Indian origin.
